WEDDING IN PALTVUORI 02.02.02.
We had lived together for ten years with my mate Kaija without wedding. We had considered a wedding every now and then, but it was always put off in the future. "When we have the place all set... after solving all economical problems...etc". At last we found, that it was never going to be THAT good. It was just to agree a day for the wedding.
We though the 01.01.01. as a nice date, but it was a little too soon, perhaps otherwise difficult to arrange too. The next special date would be 02.02.02. This had the advantage of being also my birthday and besides, saturday.
We had agreed with our good friend Hannu Jaatinen, that he would do the wedding. We considered different alternatives for the ceremony. We ended up to choose our own church in Taivassalo. Kaija made a reservation, and this was a start for the hassle. We also had in mind several places for the bridal feast. For practical reasons we ended up to have the feast at home in Paltvuori. Our old house with its big hall was otherwise suitable, but as said, one could hope for a better shape of corners...And although the hall is big, we couldn't imagine of having more than fifty people. We wanted to have all of the guests (adults..) in the same room with us. This put a limit to the list of guest ofcourse, which was the downside of the arrangement. In addition, as a poor man, I had to keep in mind the realities of life, it costs money to feast...
Kaija was the actual organizer. I did my best in grubbing places, with variable success. I started with a big hand; the about-to-crash-down roof of the cowhouse was broken down with a caterpillar. The old junk was burned in a high heap, lasting for ten days. I continued with many smaller activities, painting doors, mounting window sheets etc. After all they felt quite insignificant.
We had good friends helping us with the preparations. Stefan promised to smoke fish, Outi scanned for and wrote poetry to wedding sweets and was busy making things. Jaakko in the neighbour arranged the lying about roof timber with his tractor, Eini made a huge task sewing the dresses for our bridesmaids, knitting carpets, Eija promised to take care of the brides beauty etc. etc.
The weather was not too good at the beginning of the year, the snow kept melting away, the yard was dark and slimy. Ofcourse we were hoping for snow, the magic of the blue twilight. Two weeks before the wedding it started snowing. In the end we got more snow than in many winters. One day before the wedding we had really beautiful in our yard!
